Tempus Irae Enhanced for Aleph One
If Lucas is allowed to sully our precious childhood memories of Star Wars with yearly retooling... if Spielburg can replace the guns in E.T. with walkie talkies... well then, Nardo proudly reinvents history, and releases our Extra Special Exclusive DVD edition of Tempus Irae. Ok, just kidding about the DVD.
First of all, ignore the installation instructions in the Tempus Irae.pdf file. They are the original instructions that came with Tempus 10 years or so ago, and do not pertain to this release of Tempus Irae. Here are the installation instructions:
Get Aleph One
Because this release of Tempus Irae uses .DDS textures, you will need to be running at minimum the June 2006 release of Aleph One. You can get this at http://source.bungie.org/get/ You do not need any other version of Marathon to run Tempus Irae, so just get the Aleph One distribution for your particular operating system.
Copy either Aleph One.app or Aleph One.exe from the Aleph One distribution you downloaded to this Tempus_Irae directory.
Thats it! Run the Aleph One executable and enjoy. I particularly recommend using OpenGL graphics set to the native resolution of your screen - this is the only way you'll get to see the nifty 24 bit textures created just for this redistribution. If you have a video card that has at least 64Mb of VRAM, I recommend downloading and installing the Tempus Premium Landscapes - they are much prettier than the standard sized ones included with this distribution.
What's Enhanced?
Every wall texture has been rebuilt from scratch, most of them in Cinema 4D. The sprites have been largely left alone, with a couple of exceptions. There are many reasons for this, but it largely comes down to finding the right balance between sprucing this thing up, and leaving all of the original Bungie artwork to stick out like a sore thumb. I am also told that a lot of you are still using older Macs, so, in the interest of making the most people happy, this is the compromise I have decided to strike.
Landscapes
By default, Aleph One will give you standard sized landscape graphics at 1024 x 540 resolution. If your video card is capable of it, I recommend going into the Preferences / Graphics / Rendering Options and setting the Landscapes from "Higher" to "Highest" or "Unlimited". This will give you improved quality 2048 x 1080 sized landscape graphics.
I created some new landscapes for Tempus Irae at 4096 x 1080 which look fabulous. Rather than repeating twice around the world like standard Marathon landscpaes, these offer a unique view in any direction. But Gregory Smith, the new high wizard of the Aleph One project informed me that a lot of you wouldn't be able to make use of such gigantic textures. You'll need a fairly recent video card with a mimimum 64Mb of VRAM, optimally more. I have heard that some ATI video cards are hardware constrained to only handle 2K textures, so this is an Nvidia only option unless you are sure your video card can handle 4K textures. Look for the Tempus_Irae_Premium_Landscapes.zip file where you downloaded this game archive.
